Ghat Festival Tour

An adventurous 10 day 'off the beaten track' journey accompanied by an experienced English speaking local Libyan guide. In the desert you will be sleeping under the stars and we do provide tents and camp beds. The highlight of this tour is the Ghat Festival, an annual Tuareg and Berber cultural festival.

Day 1

Arrive in Tripoli: Arrive in Tripoli, meet the team and have dinner in a lively local restaurant. Fly to Sebha.

Day 2

Germa and the Garamantians: Drive to Germa and explore the archaeological remains of the Garamantian civilisation - the first indigenous empire of significance in Libya.

Day 3

Ghat Festival: Wander through the old caravan trading town of Ghat. Attend festival events such as camel racing, traditional singing, dancing and craftsmanship.

Day 4

Rock Art: Drive through other-worldly, awe inspiring landscape stopping to look at the prehistoric rock art depicting scenes of life prior to the desertification of the Sahara.

Day 5

Deep in the Acacus Mountains: Explore some of the many hundreds of wadis, visit prehistoric caves, and meet some of the Tuareg still living a traditional life in the Acacus.

Day 6

The Awiss and Aweinat: Drive through the lunar landscape of the Awiss where rock protrusions in all shapes and sizes shape the desert.

Day 7

Ubari Sand Sea: Experience the magnificence of the Sahara and feel the exhilaration of racing up and over huge sand dunes.

Day 8

Umm al Maa: Relax by the most picturesque lake, Umm al Maa, before returning to Sebha to catch the flight back to Tripoli.

Day 9

Leptis Magna: The city of Leptis Magna is one of the highlights of any Libyan tour. An extensive site, Leptis Magna was once one of the most extravagantly appointed cities of the Roman Empire.

Day 10

Tripoli and Home: Tripoli is an attractive city combining the dual charms of the Arab old quarter and the Italianate streets of the new town. Explore the souks, shops and café culture in the old medina.
