About Lebanon

Lebanon is such a great country...and although weighed down by its often violent history it has recently stabilised to become a must see destination. Lebanon has been home to various civilizations and cultures for thousands of years...once home to the Phoenicians and then subsequently conquered and occupied by the Assyrians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs, the Crusaders, the Ottoman Turks and most recently the French, Lebanese culture has over the millennia evolved by borrowing from all of these groups. The countries’ population is incredibly diverse and composed of different ethnic and religious groups: you could be standing in the middle of a Cedar forest with a group of Hell’s Angels on one side and a group of Druze (an Islamic reformist sect) on the other and both would be happily going about their business.
Beirut the capital city is a wonderfully glamorous multi-cultural and vibrant city with a fantastic National museum and great restaurants and sites. The Lebanese are wonderfully warm and welcoming by nature and you will hear them speak Arabic, French and English all in one sentence. Tourism has played a big part in the country – a country once renowned for being the ‘Paris of the Middle East’ for many years until the Civil War destroyed much of it. Since then things have been getting back on track (with the odd blip here and there!) Infrastructure is good and there are a good variety of hotels to choose from including many luxurious Internationally renowned chains as well as the odd boutiqe hotel outside of Beirut. The country has many ancient sites and those that stand out are the spectacular ruins of Baalbeck, the pretty port of Byblos, and the wonderful nature reserves in the north and south east of the country.
