Algeria FAQsBelow are a number of frequently asked questions. Answers can be viewed by clicking on the question title. Is it for me?Simoon’s current focus in Algeria is the Sahara desert. As a result the tours require a moderate level of fitness and involve camping in isolated areas. The use of domestic flights and local transport mean that a level of flexibility in the itinerary might be necessary. The tours involve exploration of ‘off the beaten path’ destinations so you should come with a sense of both adventure and humour, and an ability to adapt. If you are not sure, talk to one of our staff to get a better idea of what to expect from the tours and the country. Are you ATOL bonded?Yes. Our ATOL number is 6694 How active will my trip be?It really depends on what you choose to do. We can tailor make a tour that can be as active or as relaxed as you like. Can I opt out of certain activities? Our tours are generally group walking tours and as such the only alternative to walking would be camel riding. Is it safe?Algeria has seen some recent unrest in the north; however the focus of Simoon Travel is the more stable south of the country. Simoon Travel puts the safety of its clients as a first priority and would not offer tours that in any way endanger our clients or staff. Simoon Travel is in contact with governments, media and nongovernmental organisations to monitor both the political and security situation on the ground in all of our destinations. What will the weather be like? The best time to visit the Sahara is October to March, however it is worth noting that the winter temperatures can fall as low as freezing at night. The daytime temperatures during this period would be 20 – 30 degrees centigrade. How much spending money will I need? Please check your itinerary to see what is included but usually you will need very little spending money. You’ll need some money for personal spending, tipping and shopping. Further details would be provided in your pre-departure information. If you are not sure contact one of our staff. What should I wear?Algeria is a Muslim society, so shorts, leggings and tops with no sleeves are not appropriate. Men can wear long shorts in the desert. Loose fitting cotton clothing is the most practical type of clothing – both cooling and culturally sensitive. Do I need any special equipment?A detailed equipment list will be sent to you. Generally you will need a good pair of walking boots, a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, soft-sided holdall and a water bottle/bladder. Do I need any vaccinations? There are no compulsory vaccinations for visitors but Simoon Travel recommends being up to date with Tetanus, Typhoid, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A and Polio. What do you suggest with regard to tipping? We will send information regarding tipping along with your pre-departure information. How many other people will be on my trip? The maximum number on a group tour is 14. What are the guides like? Our local guides and drivers are friendly, experienced and hard working. As part of our commitment to local communities the majority of the guides are local Tuareg nomads, as a result only a few of them can speak some French. What vehicles will I be travelling in?Predominantly the tours are walking tours. On days that vehicles are needed they are generally 1990’s Land Cruisers: ideally suited to the sometimes inhospitable terrain. Can you arrange a personalised and/or private itinerary?Yes we can. What will the accommodation be like? The tours in Algeria usually involve camping under the stars – a wonderful way to really experience the desert environment. The hotels in towns are basic, but clean and comfortable. Do I need travel insurance?Yes and we can provide a full comprehensive insurance policy through Citybond Suretravel. Are there any specific passport or visa requirements?Your passport has to be valid for 6 months after your date of departure and Simoon will obtain your visa prior to departure – this will require around 14 working days (about three weeks before your departure date). Would it be suitable for my children?Generally children under the age of 12 would find the walking challenging. This type of desert adventure is suited to older children. Are flights included?Yes flights are included in the price. However please note that flights may be subject to seasonal fare or tax increases. A land arrangement only price will also be available should you want to book your flights independently of us. |
